Sending Money Home to India: How to Pay Less in Fees
By Satyavadan Prakhya ยท November 1, 2026 ยท 6 min read
For millions of Indian families abroad, sending money home is a monthly routine โ supporting parents, paying a home loan, or building savings in India. But many people lose a surprising amount on every transfer without noticing, because the biggest cost is often hidden.
Note: this article shares general money education, not financial, tax or legal advice. Rules differ by country and change often โ check official sources or speak to a qualified adviser or chartered accountant before making decisions.
The two costs of every transfer
- The fee โ a fixed or percentage charge you can see.
- The exchange-rate margin โ the difference between the rate you get and the real "mid-market" rate (the one you see on Google or currency sites). This is often bigger than the fee.
Example: if the mid-market rate is 1 unit = 100 rupees and you're offered 98.5, you lose 1.5% on the whole amount โ on a transfer of 2,000 units, that's 3,000 rupees, even if the provider advertises "zero fees".
How to compare providers properly
Ignore the advertising and compare one number: how many rupees will arrive in India for the same amount sent, after all fees. Check at the same time of day, as rates move.
Your main options
| Option | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Bank wire transfer | Large amounts, convenience | Often the weakest exchange rate plus fees on both sides |
| Exchange houses (very common in the Gulf) | Competitive rates, cash or app transfers, fast | Rates differ between branches and apps โ compare |
| Online money-transfer services and apps | Transparent pricing, quick bank-to-bank transfers | Limits for new users; check the provider is properly licensed |
| Bank remittance partner services | Sending straight into an Indian bank account | Check the final rupee amount, not just the fee |
8 ways to pay less
- Compare every few months โ the cheapest provider changes.
- Send less often, in larger amounts if the fee is fixed.
- Pay from your bank account, not a credit card โ card-funded transfers can be treated as cash advances with extra charges and interest.
- Use rate alerts if you're not in a hurry, but don't try to "time the market" โ small differences rarely matter as much as the provider's margin.
- Check for receiving-bank charges in India.
- Send your own savings to your NRE account โ money there stays repatriable. See our NRE vs NRO guide.
- Use first-transfer offers sensibly, but judge providers on their regular rate.
- Keep records of transfers โ useful for tax and paperwork later.
Is money sent to family taxed in India?
In general, money you send to close relatives as a gift is not taxed in the hands of the recipient in India, as Indian tax law exempts gifts from "relatives" (as defined in the law). Income your family earns from that money, such as interest, is taxable as usual. Rules can change and have details โ check with a chartered accountant for your situation.
Stay safe
- Never send money to someone you haven't met because of a phone call, message or "urgent" request โ even if they claim to be a relative, bank or government official.
- Double-check the account number and IFSC code before the first transfer; send a small test amount first.
- Only use licensed providers and official apps.
The bottom line
Compare the rupees that arrive, not the advertised fee. Fund transfers from your bank account, send in sensible batches, and use an NRE account for your own savings. Small percentages add up to a lot over a year.
